From My Cold Dead Hands

Patrick got me thinking... a big quake here in LA could cause the same sort of situation thaat is now going down in New Orleans. This chaos is even AFTER they had a 2-3 day warning... quakes hit with NO warning what so ever. Plus LA is bigger, crazier and has fanicer places worth looting.

What if I am holed in in my aprtment trying to keep looters/terrorists/zombies from stealing my G4 and/or water and/or wife & child?

I have always been anti-violence and anti-gun (except when playing GTA), but now I am wondering about our safety in a lawless situation.

What I am saying is... clearly, I must own an assault rifle.

I've been paranoid about it for the past couple days. we have NO resources right now to handle another disaster.

dude they have those kinds you can disassemble and put in those bad ass silver metal cases with that foamy eggshell in side. it will take 5 minutes to put it together while your apartment is torched, but you'll look fucking boss putting it together. your wife will be sitting there all nervous and turned on and stuff. chicks love dudes who put together power.

While I certainly don't have any need for an assault rifle, P and I have been talking about buying a handgun for months. It isn't anything we would keep loaded or plan to use in the event of a burglary or for daily self-defense. However, seeing as how we live in an area where an earthquake could easily result in lawlessness and civil unrest with not enough resources to help maintain order...

Violence is definitely a last resort and I hope that I will never have to resort to it. Having said that, if I am EVER put into a position where someone is threatening my life or the life of someone I care about, I will not hesistate to pull that trigger and put a cap in that person's ass.

Plus, I don't really trust our government and like the idea of keeping them afraid of the arm-bearing general population like they should be.

that's pretty much exactly how i feel... but I am curious.. once I get a gun-- will I get into it? Will a nice little handgun for my protection be like a gate-way gun? will I want BIGGER guns?

goes to show our lack of faith in our government to protect us when we need it. i think everyone in this nation is feeling that right now. gun sales surge. im totally broke but i will find a way to purchase a handgun.

I think that we sometimes take it for granted that help will always be there when we need it. The crisis in New Orleans goes to show that a massive emergency response cannot always be mobilized quickly enough. After the Northridge Quake in 1994, it took nearly a week to restore power in my area and get things up and running again...and that was in an isolated suburb of LA without rioting, looting and massive injuries to contend with.

What I do not trust is the ability of some people to maintain their composure in times of crisis and not succumb to the pressures of mob mentality. I have seen so many people panic and completely lose their ability to be rational in MINOR emergencies. For the most part, people are not prepared for crisis and lack coping mechanisms. It is the irrational behavior that results from desperation and panic that scares me more than anything else. Once a person loses control of their ability to reason, they cannot be trusted.

I lived though the Northridge quake and it was no fun..however since I lived out of La at the time I didnt feel the aftermath as in looting..
SO my advice to you is either move out of los angeles county and to orange county in a small suburb..hint hint...plus our school district is way better than LA....

We have kits here at home and in both cars. If you can, always included some back up extras of your meds. - Asthma inhaler ect. or at the very least a copy of your prescription.

oh jesus christ, there was no large-scale looting during the 94 quake, only in the months afterwards when buildings were tagged for no re-entry while still full of belongings for months. you can't sit in front of your former apartment in a tent with a gun and a bag of diapers.

the only time i've seen riots was during the rodney king trial. maybe you should be nicer to black people instead. or move to a neighborhood where you can rob some hookers on the way to the nearest liquor store. freak.
